“Come, sit with me,” she says.

I allow her hand, which is as hard as stone, to lead me to a nearby rock. By now, my eyes have adjusted to the dark. I face up to see the perfectly spherical dome. The only plants in the vicinity are dark creepers, coiled together like snakes. The thick roots are entwined in such a way that they make an eerie pattern where there should have been a ceiling.

I prop myself against the rock Mother tree leads me to. My mind is already running on how I will escape from her. She is a clinger.

“I’ve been waiting for you,” she says.

“Did you get bored again?” I stare quizzically into her unblinking eyes. She has neither eyelashes nor eyebrows. Her face is flat.

“Bored?” Her voice turns sharp. “I’ve been busy. Busy.”

“What? Sharpening your talons, I see.”

It should be a smile that creeps up her face, but it looks like something else. I suppose she is blushing as her skin becomes a tinge darker.

“You noticed,” she coos, as though she is a little girl.

I sigh inwardly. It would help if the Mother tree didn’t have such a huge crush on me. She always says I resemble, very much, one King of old. A king she had loved. Her story is a tragic one, really, though it changes every time she tells it. She is said to be the wisest of all Soleroids, I think she is just clever and manipulative. How in all Solasis did the royals allow an old woman to live tax-free in the castle? Clearly, she has a strong aura about her - deadly even but that doesn’t explain anything. More than her power, Mother tree also has her secrets.

“You are thinking about a girl,” Mother tree’s voice pierces through my thoughts. I sense a tinge of jealousy in it.

“I have been betrayed,” I say.

“I know. I don’t know why you are upset. It is our way. The mightiest gets the best!”

She seems to know everything that has happened. I lower my face to study her. Though I sit, she is still shorter than me. She never sits, of course. I am not sure she has a back side. She stands, like a tree, even when asleep. If, ever at all she sleeps.

  “I am a mighty man.”

“Oh, that you are. Yes. Yes. That you are. But, allow me to ask… is that girl – Sasha is her name, no? Is she the best?” she asks in a queer voice.

I think for a moment. Sasha is the best I have had in bed so far. I am about to nod, then I stop. No, there was that other girl called Pelum. She had been really good. I must have lost interest when she’d become clingy. Oh, and Indramas was excellent in bed too… my thoughts trailed. There were more. No, Sasha may not be the best but she is the one I like best at the moment. I sigh.

“Is she?” Mother tree wants an answer.

“No,” I say. I turn my body towards her. “You are the best, Mother tree.”

She scoffs, then giggles in pleasure. “You remind me of your mother. Your father always brought her here.”

My body stiffens. I try not to think of my mother. If I do, it will make me hate my father. And yet, a Soleroid is a Soleroid at heart. Loyalty only comes after gain. There is no room for love in Solasis. Love is weak, was the first philosophy I learned as a child.

“I don’t want to talk about my mother.” I grit my teeth.

“And yet every single day, you act just like your father does. Except that no one can punish a King.” She shuffles away from me.

I feel my blood run cold in my veins. Usually, Mother tree is cordial with me, and most times flirty. Yet, now she is being the punisher my father wants her to be. How dare she compare my actions to his? My father had always made certain to find fault with my mother, so as to banish her to the Mother tree. While she was away, he would parade himself with his new lady-conquest and even bed her in their matrimonial bed. My mother, Elertria Heluka, knew all this because, despite being wise, Mother tree can keep no secrets. Elertria had killed herself. She’d banished herself to hell, from where she wouldn’t have to return ever again and face shame from the council. It was the way of Solasis. You either win, or you die.

“As long as I have not done the wedding dance, I am not cheating on anyone,” I declare hotly.

“The true question is, are you not cheating yourself?” she asks, gently.

I clench my fist. My jaw clamps in an effort to keep me from screaming out loud. I have never really liked Mother tree, however, I respect her greatly. She may smell, but there is wisdom coming out of that tiny mouth. Now, I do not know how to react. I just want to leave.

“Am I forgiven, Mother tree?” I ask stiffly. Her forgiveness for my sin is the only way I will get to leave. Mother tree turns her large head to me.

“Forgiven?” She laughs. “First, dance with me.”

  “God, no.”

Before I can resist, she is pulling me towards her. Her stiff hands clutch my waist and I place my palms on her shoulders. When I look down at her, I recoil from the awfulness I see. Where her hair should have been, are thickly matted roots like overgrown green worms. I gag. Perhaps she is a tree, after all, I decipher. Her hopeful face looks up at me. We move side to side in dance.

“Centuries, my King held me like this,” she says. “This was the ballroom. Many people were here, and I was the Queen.”

“The Queen?” Last time she had told me she had fallen in love with the King that reigned. He couldn’t reciprocate her love because she was a mere housemaid.

“Yes, everyone adored me,” she says.

During my last visit, she had declared that she was hated by everyone because the King loved her. Still, no matter how her story changes each time, some things stay the same. She was dancing in a ballroom with a King. Then he is killed by an arrow that flies from nowhere, right in her arms. She is forced to wed, or bed, the successor who killed her King. Everything else always changes.

“But-” I try to make sense of her story.

“Shh… do you hear that music?” she asks. I cannot hear a thing. She rests her head on my torso, and coos, “Yes, yes.”

I try not to think of how inappropriate she is being. As long as she doesn’t try to kiss me, I muse. Things we do for freedom. I dance with her. She soon gets lost in her own nostalgia and lets me go.

The fascinating thing about spending time with the Mother tree is that mere seconds are hours, and hours are days. I spent a whole day with her. I have missed a week in real time. When I take my leave, at once I know that my brothers’ wedding preparations are well underway.

  Chapter 5

  Erien

If I had entered Mother tree’s lair with a burden on my shoulder, I left with a load on my head. Not only did she upset me by reminding me about my mother’s fate, she also dared compare me to my father. I may be insolent; nonetheless, I will never go as far as to do what my father did to Elertria.

“She was mine to take. Not his!” I mutter angrily as I stride to my room.

As I make a quick turn, I almost walk head on into Kravis’ personal guard, Leysh. Quick, I jump back and away. I will have to take the back route if no one is to know that I am on the loose.

I make way for my room when I hear girls giggling. My attention is stirred. The girls laugh again. To the west of the castle, just shy of my room is the mouth of a wide indoor natural hot spring. Young maidens wanting to catch my eye usually bath there. I decide to throw away my anonymity and have some fun. So what if my father discovers Mother tree let me out too soon?

It is a short walk to the bubbling hot springs. Its entrance is marked by the eight feet tall statue of a beautiful naked Soleroid woman; her breasts are round, her crotch is well trimmed and her lips are sensual. At that, I reprimand myself. I have no sense longing for a statue when the real women are before me. In two straight queues, a dozen women dressed in white silken robes are knee deep in the water. Each is waiting for something or someone I cannot see.

Suddenly, a tall slender body emerges from the water. I gasp when my eyes fall upon perfectly round wet buttocks. Her long violet hair sticks down to her skin, even down to the small of her back. Just the sight of her slender hands passing through her hair sends an electric jolt through my body and I am a boy again, seeing a woman for the first time. Her skin is red from the heat and smoke permeates from her skin. She is indeed hot, in every possible way. The woman turns to me, her pouty lips a fresh pink that match her nipples. I feel myself go hard. Oh, why did Sasha always do this to me?

  “My King,” she says.

I deride. “Oh, now I am your king?” However, I am inwardly pleased she calls me that.

The other maidens gape at me as if seeing me for the first time. I should not be there. Sasha is taking her maiden bathe before the marriage. No man should be there. Still, she walks out of the water so seductively that I cannot help but stare at the cute tiny feet on her long legs. I swallow hard. Sasha stands a breath away from me. I struggle to avert my gaze from her perfectly round breast. I look straight into her golden eyes.

  “Erien.”

She studies her feet as though shy. This makes me look down at her. I press my legs together so as to squeeze my balls. They are aching with desire and she knows it. The bulge in my pants cannot be missed.

“Come with me,” I tell her.

She makes a small whimpering sound. I cannot tell whether she is disagreeing or if she is simply horny. I study her body. The wetness on her nude skin has less to do with the water she is coming out from. She wants me. She wants me badly. The maidens continue to watch us. I see her shiver. She acts shy, but if we were alone, she would have been the one riding me like a stallion without any preamble.

“They are watching us,” she whispers.

“Everyone was watching when my brother took you. You should have said no.”

Her face turned scarlet. “How can I say no
to the future King?”

“There is a chance that I can be King too.” I don’t know what I am saying. All I know is that my crotch is doing the talking. I just want to pound her soft flesh, to make her moan so loud that everyone in the castle will hear it.

“Can you… will you?” Her gaze locks into mine.

Unable to control myself, I squeeze Sasha’s buttock until it is red. Juices flow down her thigh, welcoming the sensation. I can hear gasps from the other maidens, and yet I know it is simply from the desire that I was touching them. I ponder that there will be time for that later. I’d already caught the eye of one I would like to test out in bed.

Sasha takes my hand though I know she really just wants me to pin her against the wall, and pummel her until she can’t think. A maiden hurries towards her and places a silver silk garment over her. It covers her body beautifully but her nipples fight with the garment to be seen. I cannot wait any longer.

Eager, I sweep Sasha off her feet into my strong arms. Her soft arms wrap around my muscular neck. While I take long strides to my room, her feet dangle in a deliberate manner. She makes sure that the sole of her foot rubs against my rigid appendage with each step. Sasha is an expert at being a tease. Her tongue finds my way to the back of my ear.

  “Sasha!” I cry.

I fear I might explode before we reach my bed. She doesn’t care; her foot continues to tease my crotch. Beaded sweat breaks on my forehead. It is taking all I have not to push her to the wall and take her right there and then. She seems to know this because her tongue rubs against my lips.

Mercifully, the door to my chamber appears. I tackle it with a swift kick of the leg. This time, I make sure to lock the doors. I do not want my bouts of passion interrupted. Then I put Sasha down on the bed.

  “Take me, please,” she begs.

“You belong to my brother,” I find myself saying even though my hands are already pushing down my pants. My erect appendage welcomes the sight of her open legs.

“He is not as exciting as you,” she purrs.

“Then why did you accept to do the wedding dance with him?” I ask hurriedly removing my shirt.

  “The King asked me.”

  “He is not yet King.”

“No. Your father. He asked me,” Sasha says.

  “Oh.”

Sasha squirms. She is impatient. Her legs wrap around my waist like a belt pulling me closer to her throbbing crotch. The bud on my appendage secretes a clear liquid. Every bone in my body aches for her. I log to make Sasha scream; to make her beg me to marry her even if she is already betrothed to Kravis.

I position my body in between her thighs. Grabbing her buttocks, I push my hips forward. The head of my crotch is just kissing hers when loud thundering disturbs what would have been ferocious intercourse. The pounding at the door continues.

“Erien! Do you have the bride?” My father’s voice echoes.

I groan. I am not even fully inside Sasha and then this. I think whether to continue with quick thrusts or just give up. Sasha desperately wants the former. I am about to thrust myself inside her when the pounding at the door grows louder.

“Erien! I swear I will have your neck!” Kravis bellows.

Reluctantly, I pull out of Sasha without even entering her. My crotch is throbbing from the failed attempt. The continuous barraging at the door makes me snap back to my senses. I dress up as quickly as I can. Even Sasha knows better than to continue lying down with her pee open for the world to see. She is already decent in her silk gown, even if there is nothing beneath it – even her nipples are no longer erect. She stares at me flatly.

“Sasha, love. Let’s run away,” I say.

“My King waits on the other side of the door,” she replies, devoid of emotion.

“Just a few minutes ago, I was your king!”

“We did not do the wedding dance together. You pulled out just now.” She wasn’t even smiling at me.

“Nonsense. Let’s go before they come through that door. With me you will be free, you will be happy.”

As if to decide, she stares at the door and then at me. We can both hear that they are trying to break it down. I hold my breath in wait for her response. Finally, Sasha smiles with her eyes but not her lips. I ignore the ache in my pants and take that as an indication. Grabbing her hand, I lead her out to the balcony. Sasha will finally be mine and mine alone.

  Chapter 6

  Erien

Sasha comes willingly. My heart palpitates at the thought that she is finally choosing me. Sasha follows me out to the balcony. My eyes pour over the streets that glitter with a billion crystals. It is a beautiful sight to behold. Sasha’s wavy violet hair flows like a garment in the wind. She holds my waist, as if afraid that her tiny frame will be blown away as well. I place a protective hand over her.

“Do you trust me?” I ask.

“I do, with all my heart, with all my soul… my King!” she says.

I sweep her off her feet again. Sasha is the weight of paper in my arms. With eloquence, I jump from the balcony to the ugly effigy that stands between Kravis’ room and mine. It is to be a sweet escape.

  CRASH!!!!

The heavy doors to my room explode and crack under the might of the royal guards. My blood pumps hotly. From the corner of my eyes, I can see the royal guards appear on the balcony. My father is with them.

This is the part where I jump, yet I do not. Sasha is yelling and crying as though she’d just been set ablaze. I stare at her in my arms, writhing like a child.

  “What’s wrong?” I ask her.

Her response is an awful wailing. I am paralyzed with uncertainty until it hits me. She is faking it. She wants them to believe she is being held at ill will. The nerve of her! I grimace. I put her down. Sasha looks scared. She doesn’t have the ability to jump as high as I. Even better, I muse. Her frightened expression at being stranded alone on a lifeless bust lightens my mood a bit. Still, it doesn’t solve my problem.

Kravis has just arrived at his balcony along with a dozen of guards. There is no easy way out for me. I can only decide whether I want to confront my father or my brother first. I decide the latter. Jumping off the effigy, I land face to face with Kravis. We stand nose to nose even though he is a head shorter than me. He is angry. I have left his bride out in the open. She looks terrified. I think she deserves it.

“You wretch of a brother! If you weren’t my kin, oh the things I would have done to you.”

“I think the same thing,” I spit back.
